It’s not only taking care of the battery itself, though, because it’s also important to make sure that the motorcycle battery charger is also in working order as they are all connected to each other.
Even though there are four different types of batteries in usage currently, gel filled, maintenance free, sealed type, and lead acid type batteries, the proper maintenance of your battery is pretty much the same for all types of battery apart from a few exceptions.
A good maintenance regime should involve looking after the battery regularly – on a monthly basis is a good idea. The monthly check is just a basic assessment and doesn’t involve you carrying out any major repairs most of the time so it should only take a couple of hours.
When carrying out your regular maintenance, make sure that you clean the top of the battery to get rid of any grime or dirt which may have accumulated. However, you should also check the terminals and connectors for a build-up of dirt and grime too. If you notice white sediment then this is sulphate and should be removed with a soft wire brush while using light strokes.
The battery should also be charged on a monthly basis. There’s little point in paying great care and attention to all the moving parts of your bike if it then refuses to start.
Having your own motorcycle battery charger is a bonus and an expensive item of maintenance equipment and there’s a range of styles and sizes available so which one you have really is down to personal preference. Noco battery chargers are always a popular favourite for many bikers as they tend to provide really good service for batteries while being very long-lasting units.
Most people tend to possess lead acid motorcycle batteries so it’s prudent to go into their maintenance a little. Checking and altering the electrolyte levels is critical to the performance of these batteries so this is the one thing you may find yourself doing monthly. This is done by laying the battery on a flat surface and then filling the battery up to the upper level marks using either de-ionized or distilled water. This water can be bought from most motorcycle shops, garages, car part retailers and hardware stores.
There are some situations where even proper care of a battery won’t help you, though, because the battery simply needs replacing. Two common situations where this may arise is when the bike struggles to start; this is a common message which says that the battery is on its last legs and might need replacing soon. If the battery is only holding its charge for a short period, such as one or two days, then again, the battery may need replacing. This is a very common problem with old batteries.
Taking care of your battery is not a difficult or time-consuming process to go through as most of the time it’s just about keeping it clean and replacing the electrolytes to ensure optimum performance. The bottom line is monthly checks are critical for your battery.
