Classification helps in the following ways- 1) Classification reduces the bulk of the data. 2) Classification simplifies the data. 3) Classification facilitates comparison of characteristics. 4) Classification renders the data ready for statistical analysis. A tabular arrangement of classified data is called tabulation. Tabulation is a systematic arrangement of classified data in rows and columns of a table. It is a neat form of presentation of classified data. There are four types of classification. They are (a) Quantitative classification (classification with regard to variable) (b) Qualitative classification (classification with regard to attribute) (c) Spatial classification (geographical classification) (d) Temporal classification (chronological classification, classification with regard to time). Classification of units on the basis of a single characteristic is called simple or one way classification. Simultaneous classification of units on the basis of two or more characteristics is called many fold classification. A table showing many fold classified data is called contingency table. Classification of units on the basis of a characteristic into two classes is called dichotomy. Thus, classification on the basis of sex as Men and Women is dichotomy. Classification of people as ‘married’ and ‘unmarried’ is dichotomy.
