This is probably because reducing means a complete lifestyle change while the other two principles simply represents the addition of new activities to one’s lifestyle or routine. With reducing, people have to take a good look at the way they are living and figure out a way to cut back on unnecessary consumption – or even waste – of natural resources, which are fast becoming depleted as many people still remain unaware or even stubborn about the need for environmental conservation.

Simplification is the first thing to do to practice reduction, but it won’t be easy, warns Ingrid Callot. Leading a simple life is something that will come especially hard to those who work hard for their money and prefer to lead a comfortable lifestyle – even if it means increasing pollution levels to the world. Of the three principles, reduction represents not just the greatest changes but the biggest sacrifices one has to make as well. Individuals, for instance, should consider switching their gas-guzzling SUVs and sport cars to something more fuel-efficient like electric or hybrid cars. Better yet, individuals should learn to take advantage of more eco-friendly ways for transportation. They should join car pool parties if it will take too much time for them to commute to work. Whenever walking or biking is possible, individuals should definitely choose them over driving their cars. Walking and biking does not consume any kind of natural resources. More importantly, they are very affordable – or even free – to do, and thus be able to help individuals increase their savings.

Callot also advises people to focus more on shopping for what they need rather than what they want. Most of the time, healthy living and an eco-friendly lifestyle go hand in hand. Rather than stock the fridge with drinks, for instance, people can be healthier and more environmentally friendly with the way they eat and live if they increase their water consumption level. Studies show that a person who ups his or her water intake each day by 1.5L can look forward to losing approximately 5lbs every year. Water has also long been proven to be effective for detoxification and weight management. It can also help nourish the skin as well as improve one’s metabolism and all cellular functions in the body. Last but not the least, increasing one’s water intake can reduce their grocery bills as they cut down on their purchase of sodas, liquors, and other types of beverages.
