If you've ever repaired or installed a new lawn you know how time consuming and labor intensive it can be. You'll need to purchase the right mix of seed, prepare the soil, fertilize, and water it daily. Even after all of that hard work, there is no guarantee that it will actually grow well.

Sod is a great way to create an "instant yard" without all the mess and waiting. Sod not only creates a lush, green lawn, but it's also great for patching damaged areas. Here are some tips to installing sod.

Before ordering the sod, make sure you take accurate measurements of your yard. If you have unusual shaped sections, try to square them off and remember that it is better to order just a little extra. At the same time, the material can be expensive so don’t over-estimate too much. After you have your measurements, sketch out the area. Have a plan on what areas you want to fill in first, second, last, etc.

Prepare the area by spraying and killing any weeds and grass. When all the grass and weeds are dead, remove the old plant material. You will need to prepare four to six inches of soil in the entire area that is to be re-sod. You can rent a rototiller to make the process easier. Once you have the soil ready, you will need to add organic material. This includes fresh top soil and fertilizer. Be sure to remove any debris or rocks from the area. Then smooth the area down with a yard roller to ensure a flat even surface.

Have your sod delivered on a day and time that you will be available to immediately install it. Otherwise it could die from exposure to the heat. Install it as quickly as possible to ensure proper root development and growth. Lay the sod on the outside area first and cut any corners with a sharp knife to ensure a proper fit. From there, lay the sod in tight rows to create an even look. Within thirty minutes of laying the sod, water the area and keep it moist for two weeks. The best way to do this is to use a sprinkler system in the early morning and late evening.

If you'd rather spend your weekends doing the things you love instead of installing sod, consider hiring a professional lawn installer. A landscaper will have the tools, equipment and manpower to quickly install your new lawn and they will ensure that it's well watered so the sod will grow. The resulting lawn should be thick, green and well established in a short amount of time so you can spend your days enjoying your yard!
