To be able to maintain a body of water like a lake, it is essential to know what it is and what processes take place in the lake. Non-toxic chemicals can be used to control the growth of unwanted vegetation, weeds and algae which are considered as pests in the lake.

A lake is a natural or a synthetic water formation surrounded by land. The water, which is either salt or fresh, contains some organic substances which make the lake different from other water systems. This body of water is not connected to any water systems and is much deeper than a pond. To understand how a lake is maintained properly, it is important to know what processes are going on in the lake. There is no need to be a limnologist—a person who studies lakes, to be able to maintain a lake properly though it is necessary to have a bit of awareness regarding lake dynamics.
Having the knowledge of the things that concern a lake will be a great help in lake maintenance. One thing that connects lake and maintenance together is the watershed. It is an area of land that surrounds a lake. This land has hills, valleys and a lot of trees which serves as a draining system of the water that flows to the lake. The purpose of the watershed is to strain rainfall or snow-melt before it directly flows to the lake.
A watershed is definitely significant in maintaining a lake. The land-use patterns in the watershed have an insightful effect on the quality of the water the lake has. Some watersheds have golf courses, barns or farm lands which require the use of fertilizers affect the water quality of lake-water. The rainfall and snow-melt that flow through the watershed and into the lake let the nutrients from the fertilized lands to flow with the water to the lake. The fertilizer wash-off provides too much nutrients and causes algae blooms and intensified vegetation growth in the lake.
The propinquity of residences around the pond also has a great effect on lake maintenance. The septic systems that the houses, barns, cottages and other types of shelters use are one of the key factors that affect the lake. If these septic systems are below standards, chances are, more pollution will be added to the lake.
It is necessary to understand that lakes are almost just like ponds, except for its size and contents. So what occurs in ponds can occur in lakes too. For instance, the presence of algae, which can actually happen in any water body there is. Algae bloom can be triggered by the excessive nutrients that get in the lake. So in order to avoid algae from culminating in the lake, the first that must be done is to control the nutrients that get in the lake-water. Other factors that need to be taken care of are too much vegetation, duckweed, and other weed types. These lake residents or, as others might call them pests, should be controlled to keep the nutrients for useful life consumption. One way to control this is to use non-toxic chemicals which can be applied in small amounts in the spring.
Always keep in mind that the lives in the lake should be always put first. If your last resort would be the use of chemicals, first and foremost, check for the toxicity of the chemicals you choose for your lake.
