After enjoying my holiday last Saturday, I went back home around 5.30 in the evening. The Saturday morning was good as I enjoyed the time with my friends and had a delicious lunch in one of the best food places of the city. My stomach was so full that I could hardly walk. Just 10 minutes after entering my room, I suddenly heard the voices of some people outside my house. Out of curiosity, I peeped from my balcony and noticed that a big crowd was there just next to my entrance. I rushed towards the crowd to see what had happened.

I found that a girl was surrounded by another girl. The girl was about 15 years of age, and was crying seamlessly. When the people asked the girl what happened, she showed her wounds. Later we came to know that the girl was an orphan and had escaped from the orphanage. She asked for some food in the evening to eat and only for that she was beaten by the governess of the orphanage. The little girl was so frightened that she even refused going back to that orphanage. After some discussion, the people there made the girl understand and took her back to the orphanage. This incident put a question before us that if an orphan isn’t safe in the orphanage, then where they will get full protection. This also put a question mark before the role and responsibilities of the orphanages in the country.

The Indian Government has passed different laws to safeguard the rights and freedom of the kids in the country. But the people like the governess of the orphan are not obeying the rules properly. Every person below the age of 18 years is a child in the eyes of the law. Every child feels secured in the arms of their parents. But what about these kids who don’t have a parent to take care of them. To protect every child of the nation, the Constitution of India has declared certain rights for the child.

These are:-

1. Right to free and compulsory education for all children belonging to the age group of 6-14 year.

2. Right to be protected from any hazardous employment till the age of 14 years.

3. Right to be protected from being abused and forced by economic necessity to enter occupations unsuited to their age or strength.

4. Right to equal opportunities and facilities to develop in a healthy manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity and guaranteed protection of childhood and youth against exploitation and against moral and material abandonment.

The Indian Constitution has also ensured the right to personal liberty to the children of the nation. But instead of all these laws and liberties, there are many Indian kids who are suffering from social and economical drawbacks. Many of these children suffer from physical neglect, poor hygiene and a lack of a nurturing environment is all too common even in today’s more modern orphanages. Circumstances of desperation and poverty must be pretty significant for them to resort to such extreme measures. Sometimes an institution is the only alternative for some of these unfortunate children. To provide a healthy and supportive environment to all the children of the nation is the need of the hour. And it becomes our responsibility to take prompt action if we come across any atrocities against children, especially the orphans.
