G K Chesterton whose nick name in the literary circle was the prince of paradox, was counted among the most influential 20th century English authors. In this article, we will focus on the life and works of GK Chesterton for which he became immensely popular as well as successful. He was a versatile talented author and dabbled in various fields like philosophy, biography, journalism, poetry, detective fiction and fantasy in his prolific career.

G K Chesterton was born in London’s Kensington area in the year 1874. He received his early education at the St Paul's School. When he grew up he aspired to become an artist and enrolled in University College London and Slade School of Art for the purpose. However, he did not finish any of the courses. He started working for Redway, a London publisher in 1896. This stint continued for a period of 6 years. It was during this period that he began working as a literary critic and journalist on a freelance basis. For more than two decades of his career he wrote in the weekly columns of the Illustrated London News and Daily News.

As a matter of fact, G K Chesterton was a prolific writer. He wrote 200 short stories, a lot of poems, 80 books, plays and around 4000 essays in his career. Most of his works are still very popular among readers. Apart from writing in other newspapers he also wrote for his own paper titled G. K’s weekly. He also contributed in the Encyclopedia Britannica. His most popular novel is ‘Man Who Was Thursday’ and his readers liked the character of father Brown, the detective priest who appeared in his short stories the best. A lot of his compositions are imbued with Christian symbolism and themes.

Even though the poems of G K Chesterton got much critical acclaim they could not garner the level of popularity that his prose fiction and essays did. The majority of the writings of Chesterton reflect the author’s innate sense of humor and wit. His habit of using paradoxical comments while giving his view on serious topics made him stand apart among his contemporaries.

The critics have attributed the style of G K Chesterton to the influence of Dickens. Some have also observed the streaks of writers like George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde in his compositions. The author shared a friendly and amiable relation with the former in real life. They were often engaged in discussions and arguments. Many contemporary and next generation authors were influenced by the style of Chesterton and some of them openly acknowledged it. He passed away in 1936 leaving behind a huge body of literary works. His works are still followed and read by people and some of them even serve as a good inspiration for many. In this way, he will remain alive for ever.
