If you are planning on taking your boat out on the water this summer then you should always check that it’s safe and ready to go in order to avoid any unfortunate accidents. There are ten main things you should check before declaring that you are ready for the water.

• Check that all electronics are still in working order

Electronics have been known to fail even while they are in storage and not in use. This is why it’s essential that you check everything from the navigation lights to the bilge pump. You should also check all the wiring to make sure none of it has been exposed during storage.

• Make sure your lifejackets are in working order

This is the most essential check you can do as you can never be too careful when your personal safety is brought into the equation. Simply check there are no rips, tears, and that they still fit everybody who will be using the boat. If you have any reservations then replace them immediately.

• Renew your registration

All boats must be registered annually so you should make sure that your boat is still registered

• Check your structure

The hull is what holds your boat together and decides whether you will sink or swim. If you are in any doubt then simply take a stroll around your boat and check that there are no holes or cracks in your hull. You should also check the plug to make sure your RV battery can still be plugged in and used.

• Battery checks

If your battery isn’t working then your holiday is already cancelled so make sure you get out your marine battery charger and make sure your battery is fully charged. After your battery is fully charged then you should remember to unplug and store the marine battery charger again. If you are in any doubt about the condition of either your battery or charger then replace them immediately.

• The fire extinguisher

Fire extinguishers have a habit of not staying charged over the winter so you should check that it’s fully charged. Also check the structure of the extinguisher to make sure that there are no cracks or holes.

• Test it

It’s best if you can test whether all your devices work or not before going on holiday. If you only test one thing, though, then make sure it’s the engine because if there’s a problem you are still in a position where you can fix it at home.

• Replace your fuel

It’s best if you replace all of your fuel, if only just to make sure that it’s filled and your fuel lines are still working.

• The trailer

Check that everything on the trailer works, and also tune it up by greasing its wheels. This should apply to all relevant equipment.

• Check your inflatable’s

Anything inflatable should always be checked for holes and how usable it is. If it can’t be inflated and you’re on the water then you could easily run into trouble.
