The involvement of robotics in the field of warfare has been very significant in the last century. Terminator, robot warriors and other science flicks have never failed to amaze us.
Well, this possibility is not far from the stretches of our imagination. The possibility to future wars being fought by robots is not unlikely. That is why a lot of armies all over the world are funding research studies to discover robots suitable for combat, surveillance and strategic warfare.
Robotic warfare is here and is being utilized to perform some tasks such diffusing bombs and save more lives as robots take the place of soldiers in war zones.
Robots are being programmed and designed to work in air, space, ground, and even underwater. Another advantage of robots is that they can operate in environments humans cannot survive in. These include chemical, radioactive and biological environments.
Featuring Autonomous Combatants
The military sector is calling these robots as AC's or autonomous combatants. This is largely because robots will operate almost independently, with very little or no human control. They consider these machines as very helpful in tactical and operational warfare.
The sensory capacities of AC's are also greater compared to that of humans. These robots will have higher chances of survival, more lethal, mobile and react faster than a human being. After all, robots are effective military weapons since they do not feel anything. They do not get tired, feel pain, get hungry and do not need to sleep. In short, robots do not have their morale affected by psychological concerns.
Quite admittedly, this is way cheaper and lessens human mortality. The way wars are fought will definitely be redefined by advanced technology, in this case, robots and artificial intelligence.
Military Robots in Action
Some of the successful robots in the area of warfare are unmanned surveillance satellites and unmanned aircrafts. These robots are very accurate in hitting any target without the need of a human pilot.
In the past, robots were confined merely on collecting information behind enemy lines during World War I and II. Today, it is a whole different scenario with new robots being invented for advanced warfare.
Other robots that are being studied as of today are those capable of operating automated sentry gun, sniper systems, and robots that has a firearm, camera and radar suitable for patrolling duty.
Risks of Robots in Warfare
The one thing that many people fear, just like in the terminator movies, is that machines will be able to make decisions on their own and strike back at humans. Another dangerous situation lurks if an enemy finds a way to hack the system and use the weapon against the military.
In the present time, the United States Navy has funded several projects that improve robotics in warfare. Some are questioning the involvement of some robots since there are weapons that have become semi-autonomous.
Another downside of this is that robots do not know the rules of warfare and other code of war. The possibility of the war becoming inhumane is highly probable. As of this time, the military is yet to come up with software that will allow robots to make intelligent, ethical decisions during war. GP
