Mumbai has a large number of Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine and Management colleges. Besides IIT, Mumbai, the city has some of the most famous Engineering colleges in the country. The Engineering courses are offered by around 50 colleges in Mumbai. The Engineering courses are controlled centrally by the University of Mumbai. The Colleges are under the University with respect to commencement of exams and question papers. Many students from outside Mumbai come here in search of quality technical education.

The most important Engineering College in the city is the Indian Institute of Technology, Powai. The college is one of the most reputed IITs and is known all over the country. The college is not under the control of University of Mumbai but is run centrally by the central government. This IIT has had famous alumni and some of the best companies come here every year to pick students during the placement season. The institute has a great infrastructure and provides the highest level of technical education possible. The candidates who wish to gain an entry into the IITs have to take on the IIT JEE considered to be one of the toughest technical exams in the country.

The other colleges in the city include the famous VJTI situated in Matunga. This institute was under the purview of the University of Mumbai till 2006 but is now an autonomous Engineering Institute. The UICT is also an institute of great repute that became autonomous in 2006. Both these colleges in Mumbai are extremely popular among students in the city and the country. The entry to these institutes is on the basis of the CET, conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Mumbai regulated by the University of Mumbai. Engineering colleges other than these are not independent.

Engineering colleges in Mumbai are spread throughout the city and have a fair distribution. The Bachelor of Engineering degree offered by the University of Mumbai is a four year course. The colleges conduct the sessions for four years; however the candidate receives the degree from the University of Mumbai. The Engineering students can specialise in a variety of courses like Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Computers, IT and many more. Some of the famous colleges under the purview of the University of Mumbai are the Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Swami Vivekananda College of Engineering, K.J. Somaiya engineering College, D.J. Sanghvi College of Engineering and many more.

The entry to the Engineering colleges in Mumbai is through the Common Entrance Test or the CET. The CET is an aptitude test based on concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics that helps the candidates get in to Engineering colleges run by the University of Mumbai. The test is generally held in the month of May and the courses begin in August. There is fierce competition among the candidates to get seats into the best engineering colleges of the city and many candidates lose out on their desired colleges by a matter of one mark.
