Nissan Micra heats up price war

No carmaker across the world is unaware of the lucrative Indian car market that is churning out great numbers. But once in the market, carmakers cannot afford to overlook the Indian hatchback segment that amounts for almost 70 per cent of the total market. With the launch of Nissan Micra, carmaker Nissan has officially entered the Indian hatchback market. But along with entering the market, the company has also rekindled the price war by pricing the Nissan Micra competitively. Here is a look at some recently launched and closely priced hatchbacks.

Nissan Micra – The Nissan Micra is priced at Rs 3.98 – 5.29 lakh and is available in three variants including XE (3.98 lakh), XL (4.69 lakh) and XV (5.29 lakh) (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Nissan Micra has a 1.2L petrol unit 3 cylinder DOHC 1198cc petrol engine producing 75 BHP at 6,000 rpm and 104 NM of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Logan 1.5 litre diesel is expected in about 6 months along with an automatic transmission. Nissan Micra has the driver airbag as a standard feature in the basic variant along with a drive computer and tilt adjustable steering.

New Maruti Wagon R – The redone Wagon R has a K10B engine generating 68PS of power and 90Nm of torque. The company claims a fuel efficiency of around 18.9 kmpl. The new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is based on a completely new platform and the best thing is that the car has a lot of new features. It is competitively priced at about Rs 3.3 to 3.5 lakh. The company has also redone the cars looks and the new model has more rounded looks. The steering is also new and has been lifted from Maruti Swift and the car also comes with a seatbelt alarm as a standard feature.

The grille, headlights and bumpers have all been redesigned. On the rear there are the restyled tail lamps and rear window glasses giving the new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R a better look and feel. The car also has a rear wash and wipe and an optional ABS and Airbags in the higher end VXi model. The dashboard has a new central console which comes with integrated stereo AUX-In for ipod connectivity and larger circular control for the Aircon.

Ford Figo – With this, hatchback Ford has hit the jackpot. Fogo comes with a 1.2 Petrol Duratec and 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engines. The cars has an all-aluminum, four cylinder petrol engine with 1196 cc unit producing 71 bhp at 6250 rpm and a maximum torque of 102Nm at 4000 rpm. On the other hand the diesel unit offers 68 bhp with 160nm of torque at 2000 RPM. The car offers a 5-speed transmission for both petrol and diesel variants.

The suspension and overall design dynamics are tuned for Indian conditions and the driving is assisted by features like ABS and EBD. Both the engines are fuel efficient and the Ford figo is priced at Rs 3.53 – 5.31 lakh.

Chevrolet Beat – The Chevy Beat has a 1.2L 4 cylinder petrol engine and no diesel variant. This 1199cc 16v DOHC engine offers 79 BHP at 6,200 rpm and 108 NM torque at 4,400 rpm. The engine is extremely quite and the car is fun to drive even in traffic without needing much down-shifting. The Beat’s fuel economy is also pretty good and comes with all the features that cars in this segment have. The Chevrolet Beat’s design, especially the rear windows, is attractive and sporty.

The suspension can take to the Indian roads very well and the overall ride quality of the car is very good even on the back seat. The Chevrolet Beat is priced at Rs 3.42 – 4.03 lakh.
