The supply for energy resources, such oil, gas and coal remains in high demand. In order to access the earth’s vast resources, companies must have reliable safe equipment to get the job done. Energy production companies are constantly looking for new technology that will assist them in collecting and transporting the abundant resources. Equipment includes crude pumping systems, gas compression equipment, drilling and seismic exploration systems, and well servicing equipment. Large systems such as crude pumps require custom-manufactured motors and motor controls. These multiphase, multi-pole motors use upwards of 6,000 volts of electrical power. Each pump motor is hooked up to variable frequency controls, to regulate and efficiently distribute the power. The electrical engine controls manages the speed of the motor as well as intake and outflows of the centrifugal pumps.
Since each pump will have its own motor, a great deal of heat is generated and thus requires a proper ventilation system to cool the mechanics. Fresh air is sucked in through openings into the motor housing and then pushed into the module. Additionally, today’s technology crude oil ships allows variable speed AC drives for the cargo pumps. With this system, power is generated by ship’s generators and supplied to the speed control device through transformers. The drive devices vary the frequency of the electrical power to allow the pumps to operate at variable speeds. This ability is important for many reasons during the transportation process. Many crude oils have highly unstable elements that easily become vapor as the pressure of the liquid is lowered. When the pumping begins the pressure of the liquid is relatively high because the liquid level is well above the pump. As the oil flows through the suction piping to the pump the pressure is lowered.
The continuous pumping process and decrease of pressure,changes the volatile components of the crude oil into vapor. An abundance of vapor causes a complete loss of suction. In order to address this issue, electronic pump controls should provide the ability reduce the speed of the suction reduces the friction loss in the pipeline. Complex production equipment such as a crude oil pumping systems needs to be integrated with high quality electronic components to ensure reliable operation. Electrical malfunctions in the equipment can generate production delays and costly damage to the system function.
