The one factor that has not changed over time is the traditional art of pottery. Despite some operational c hanges involving new techniques, pottery largely remains the same except for the fact that nowadays online pottery has come into existence.
Every village, by and large, in India, invariably has (if nothing else) a potter or two besides of course the Panchayat and the post office. Ordinary clay, terracotta etc are wound in the potters wheel and transformed within a reasonable passage of time into very sturdy and attractive looking flower pots, cooking pots, vases and what not. It is sheer magic happening before our very eyes.
Of course, with the passage of time, more advanced and complex methods and techniques of pottery have come into place. Now, you have the humble potter dealing with such activities as moulding, new techniques of drying (that is faster and more thorough) and colouring that leads to numerous new colours adoring your pots. They are also able now to produce objects of varying sizes as well.

The terracotta made Black pottery work carried out in the north eastern states of Jharkhand and Bihar have been making what are called kulhars (the Hindi term for small tea cups) and tea pots that have received critical acclaim from all concerned.
Similarly, pottery is being done in the other states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, etc in a large scale and it is all said and done the livelihood of a large scale of craftspersons involved in this occupation. In UP, it is the Azamgarh district that has a flourishing pottery sector happening there.

While pottery itself is unique, even within the profession there are various styles and techniques that make them individually separate and stand out on their own. When looked at from this perspective, the black pottery being practised in the north eastern colourful state of Manipur is a class apart. And is so because of more than a couple of reasons. Let us see here what they are –
The black pottery done here in Manipur does not require a potter's wheel at all. Instead a stone is used that is found here in the region.
Secondly, there are not very many ins tances of black pottery in the world. With probably the sole exception of South Korea, this craft is very much indigenous and with not much of a precedence.
Men and women practise this crarft in equal measure and produce exquisite cooking pots, kettles, and what not.
What is more, all of this or nearly all is found online. Online pottery is now an established sector that is surging ahead with giant strides.
