Let’s start the discussion with a question, would you rather see your daughter’s acne treated with isotretinoin, a medication for which the FDA requires prescribers, pharmacies, and patients to follow a strict risk management program because it causes inflammatory bowel disease or eliminate dietary items from her diet?
Let’s start the discussion with a question, would you rather see your daughter’s acne treated with isotretinoin, a medication for which the FDA requires prescribers, pharmacies, and patients to follow a strict risk management program because it causes inflammatory bowel disease or eliminate dietary items from her diet?

Not right! If you’re like most parents, you’d probably feel more comfortable trying natural remedies first. A Pediatric naturopathic doctor also advice parents to go with naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic medicine or natural medicine is built upon the idea that the body possesses an innate ability to heal itself. For instance, when your child cut his/her finger or are exposed to a virus, their immune system kicks in to stop the invading germs. Natural medicine works with these organic healing mechanisms by supporting it with nutritious foods, vitamins, minerals, herbs and homeopathic solutions composed of these elements.

As evidence of natural medicine’s value accumulates, conventional medical practices changes, for example, fish oil was once discounted as ineffective, but now it is scientifically proven and available as a medication. Positively, such changes will continue so that a healthier kind of medicine will be the future for your children. While taking naturopathic medicine for any disease, pediatric naturopathic doctors also asks you to consider the elimination diet for your child’s better wellness. Thinking what is an elimination diet? An elimination diet removes foods from a child’s diet that are suspected of being symptoms triggers, adds them back in one at a time to see whether the child feels well or ill.

Follow these instructions for the elimination diet, if your children are old enough, they can follow the procedure themselves with your help:

• Have a 7-day food diary of the foods your child eats most.

• Have a parallel record of gastrointestinal symptoms or mood changes and connect them to the foods listed in the food diary.

• Check out if the foods that match your child’s symptoms have similarities, such as dairy, gluten, egg or corn ingredients.

• Avoid the foods that match the symptoms for a minimum of one week, preferably for one month.

• After the elimination period, reintroduce a suspect food for 2 days.

• If this food is causing the problem, then the symptoms may return. If the symptoms return, eliminate the food from your child’s diet altogether.

• If the symptoms don’t return within 3 days of reintroduction, then you can assume that the food is not causing the problem.

• Continue eliminating and reintroducing a food every 5 to 7 days until you discover the offending items.

Along with the above, also remember to keep track of not only the calories and servings, but also the different types of foods. Because nutritional needs of children are much greater than those of adults because of their rapid development and growth. In the first few years, they need high levels of healthy fats to grow smart brains. As they get bigger, they need healthy proteins, vitamins, and minerals to support growth spurts in bone and muscle. Once they enter school, immune system supporting nutrients will help them fight off colds and infections.

So, be aware of the food choices best for your child. If you don’t have any idea, seek help of your pediatric naturopathic doctor.
