How do I use my Home DNA Testing Kit?
Read the instructions within your kit with care. It’s a simple process to collect the samples for your paternity test but you need to follow the steps so there are no mistakes made. If you make mistakes in sampling then the swabs you send in will be useless for testing. If this happens you’ll need to send in new swabs for correct testing. While it’s difficult to alter DNA, some chemicals and extreme temperatures are in fact able to alter it. Under normal conditions the DNA you send will be fine and laboratory analysis will be completed successfully.
Remember to take the consent form and fill in all the parts of it. You’ll receive this form when you buy the paternity testing kit. Include your date of birth, surname, and your name. In the UK, the Human Tissue Act requires that everyone above the age of consent signs their samples. When you send your samples back send the consent form too. Don’t smoke, eat or drink anything before you collect the DNA samples. For infant and babies this applies as well but they can be given some lukewarm water.
How will I know my DNA samples have been received?
When your samples are at the lab most companies will send you a notification. You will only be informed of the expected due date of your results. The time you get the results will vary depending upon the company doing the tests. If you don’t get any email stating that your samples from the DNA testing kit have been received you can:
- Send in new samples from a new kit. You can get this kit form the company for a lesser charge. This will mean more time until you know the results.
- Another way is to buy swabs from your drugstore and take DNA samples yourself. The company will need your reference number so they can pack the DNA samples in the correct way. Don’t do this unless you have talked to someone at the DNA company doing the testing.
