Berones, Autrigones and Vascones were the tribes that were probably the first settlers of the territory of La Rioja (at the time of the Romans). La Rioja, at the beginning of the middle Ages, was part of the Duchy of Cantabria established by the Visigoths. In the 8th century, the Arabs came to this region and La Rioja belonged to Andalusia.

“La Rioja” name appeared in the 11 century for the first time, but the origin of the name is still unknown. La Rioja was known as the province of Logroño for many years. In the time of Dictator Franco, La Rioja got the status of province finally.
