One of the most famous streets in Barcelona, perhaps in all Spain, is La Rambla. It takes its name from the Arabic word meaning current or a narrow flow of water. It is a mile long street that goes south to north from the Monument to Columbus in Port Vell near the harbor to Plaza Cataluña and lies between the Barrio Gótico and El Raval.

Many Kiosks

You will be pleasantly surprised by your first sight of La Rambla. Its tree-lined pavements serve as a good backdrop to the many kiosks that line the avenue. Here you will find a variety of products on sale, from flowers to pets. Nearby there are the human statues that are so much a part of La Rambla. You can take your picture with one of these performers as a souvenir of your time in La Rambla.

Famous Buildings

You can also find art and culture on the Rambla. The Opera House or Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of the finest in the world and is located right on the Rambla. Here you will also find the Centre d'Art Santa Monica, a museum of contemporary art where you can admire the many manifestations of contemporary art on display. The Palau de la Virreina, a baroque palace that is the site of cultural events and museum exhibitions, is a good place to visit. Not far from the palace is a good example of the talent of the Catalan artist Joan Miró. It is a multicolored mosaic, circular in shape and is placed just on the side of the street where passersby can admire the talent of the Catalonian genius.

Shopping

If you are interested in shopping, you will find that La Rambla has two of the most famous shopping centers in Spain, La Boquería and El Corte Inglés. La Boquería is a famous street market where you can buy almost anything. You will find articles for the home, clothing, footwear and a variety of other items that you may or may not need some day. El Corte Inglés is seven floors of shopping where you can spend all day just looking at the many items on sale. It is famous throughout Spain, Europe and in Latin America as well for the variety of its merchandise that is aimed at all shoppers, from the bargain hunters to those of more sophisticated tastes. Not far from El Corte Inglés is the Plaça de Catalunya, the monumental plaza that is the meeting place of all who visit Barcelona. You will enjoy just sitting on one of the benches and chatting with friends or just looking around. The fountains, the sculptures and the general atmosphere all contribute to make you enjoy your visit to La Rambla.
