Logroño is a city in northern Spain. It is a capital of the province of La Rioja that now has the status of an autonomous community. The city has about 200,000 inhabitants.

Logroño was founded by the Romans. It served as a port because of its location. In that period of time, its name was Vareia. This Roman settlement was probably founded in 5th century and well-known generals like Estrabón, Tito Livio, Plinio and Ptolomeo lived here. Nowadays, there is not much left of this Roman town.

After the Romans, the city was under the jurisdiction of the Celts. In the 10th century, some battles between the kingdoms of Navarre and the Castilians were fought for this city. In the end, Castilians won it. Logroño was the seat of the Spanish Inquisition during the 17th century.

The city is a strong economic and cultural centre

Wine, textiles and metals are the main products of this city.

Santa María de la Redonda Cathedral presents an amazing mixture of different styles. It was originally built in the 12th century but later it was restored in the Gothic style. There are also two towers in the baroque style. People call them “the twin towers”.

Iglesia de San Bartolomé, Iglesia de Palacio and Iglesia de Santiago are churches that adorn this city. They are the legacy of Logroño. In this city, you will encounter a Parliament that once served as a tobacco factory and the museum of wine which has exponents that are over three thousand years old.

City Attractions

This city, like any other capital city, has a great night life and lots of parties. In Logroño, there is also a shopping area which is located in the Plaza del Mercado. You can buy almost everything there - from souvenirs to clothes made by famous fashion designers. Carmen Park is the most beautiful park in this city and it is completely natural. There you may find swans, ducks and lots of greenery. The city has several great streets for walking such as the Main Street in the old town - Calle Portales, “the path of the elephants”, where lots of good restaurants with delicious domestic cuisine can be found. On the other hand, there is Calle Marqués de San Nicolás Street that is full of cafés and places for night entertainment. A city that is rocking at all times!
