With proper foresight and simple common sense planning, you will have a fantastic Maui family vacation even if not everything goes exactly as you planned!
Royal Lahaina Resort on Maui wants its visitors to have a wonderful time and make great memories on the Valley Island. Unfortunately, poor planning can sometimes leave a nasty ink-stain on otherwise picture perfect moments. Forgetting to pack something, or having no backup plan in place in case something goes awry, have cast a pall on many a fine vacation.

Attention and memory are finite resources, and they diminish quickly if split several ways. This is why people can forget the most obvious things when they're distracted - if you're haunted by the project that's sitting half-done at the office as you rush out of the house, you might forget your keys... or worse, your kids.

For this reason, when planning for something big like a vacation in Hawaii, it pays to have a check-list of the things you need, instead of relying on memory to carry you through the day. We asked our resort staff for suggestions on how to best prepare for a Maui family vacation, and have made a list of the most common items and the most sensible suggestions.

First, planning doesn't have to be a chore. Get your whole family involved; for them, the anticipation and participation will provide a fun respite from their everyday routine, and will give everyone the satisfaction of contributing to the project. Sometimes, there will be conflicting opinions, but remember, Maui has something to do for everyone - in the span of a week or two, everyone can get a chance to fulfill their wishes and fantasies.

Second, pack spares of everything - light clothes, swimsuits, sun protection, essentials such as glasses and medicine; don't forget to bring copies of important documents and ID, just in case. Bring warm clothes if you're planning to go to the highlands - tropical weather or not, it can get chilly on Mt. Haleakala.

Third, schedule plenty of activities and plan meal excursions in advance, to minimize the time wasted on trying to decide where to go. Have back-up plans in case it rains. Make sure you've reserved a rental if you're going to need one - Maui isn't a huge island, but it's still way too big to walk, and you don't want to end up spending lots of money on taxis if you can save by renting.
