If you are looking to get a cell phone, then you have the option of going for a pre paid deal or a monthly contract. But with so many different price plans and special offers around fogging the issue, how can you decide which is right for you?

Here, we weigh up the pros and cons of each type of payment plan, to help you decide what suits you best.

Prepaid plans, also commonly referred to as pay as you go plans, are so called because you have to buy phone credits before you can use your phone for outgoing calls or texts. This type of set up has a number of advantages. If you get a prepaid phone, you never have to face a huge phone bill, or indeed any type of bill, at the end of the month.

Pay as you go phones are usually quite a bit more expensive than ones that come with a contract, which are often free. However they can work out quite a bit cheaper over time if you do not use your phone all that often. If you become dissatisfied with your service provider, you can simply pop in a sim card from another supplier, and away you go.

However, the calls themselves are usually more expensive with a pay as you go contract, and if you cant afford to buy credits the week before pay day, then you will be unable to make outgoing calls or send texts, which could be very frustrating in some circumstances.

Monthly contracts usually involve far less in the way of initial outlay, allowing you to get a far more expensive phone than you might otherwise be able to afford. The calls and texts are usually cheaper, and if you are using your phone a lot, this type of deal is usually a lot better value.

Although there are no usage limits with a contract phone, this can be both a good and a bad thing, as you may be running up a huge bill without realising it.

So, if you have a reasonable level of income and plan to use your phone a lot, then you would probably be better off with a contract phone. However, if you have unsteady finances, or do not plan on using your phone all that much, then a pre payment plan could be the way to go.
