Budget season is never easy. It's the time of the year when we have to put all the numbers together and plan out what we'll do for the rest of the year. And it seems like budget season is now a permanent time period - we're always reviewing budgets, cutting budgets, re-arranging budgets, being told to hold budgets, kills budgets, eliminate budgets.

As a result, Marketing is changing.

According to a recent study on Marketing Communications and Marketing budget spending, the marketing budgets are not growing - but shrinking. Blame the demise of the economy, the defused house market and the collapse of Wall Street for that.

And the distribution of Marketing spend is changing. Just 2 years ago, the marketing spending in a typical marketing organization in a mature industrial business would spend 10% on Internet, 20% on Advertising, 15% on Trade shows, 30% on Sales Campaigns and 20% on Product Literature and just 5% on Promotional Products.

During the first quarter of 2010, the Marcom Delta Institute (MDI, Phoenix) sampled the same 100 companies and saw a significant change in how marketing dollars were spent.

For 2010, Internet represents 20% of the marketing spend, 8% Advertising (a 12% drop), Trade shows 10%, Sales Campaigns 30%, Product Literature 15% and Promotional Products - 17% - Promotional Products being what appears to have been a great untapped potential of personalized gifts and items with company logos.

Marketing Strategies are changing with improved results. Promotional Products as a Marketing Category grew by an incredible 12%! The reason is simple - more and more companies are trying to get value for money and make marketing their work.

And it seems the pressure of financial turmoil is actually making customers get better results on their marketing investments.

Return-on-Investment (ROI) is the key figure by which by marketing is measured - how much money is gained by the marketing dollars spent. According to the MDI-study, the measured ROI on the randomly selected 100 companies was 10.9% - It means that for every dollar spent on marketing, the company earns $1.109 back.

After the reshuffle and re-alignment of marketing dollars, the ROI has been improved to 15.4%. For every dollars spent on marketing, the company earns $1.154 back. It may not sound like much - but wouldn't you rather make $115,400 than $110,900 a year?

And ROI is the ultimate proof that marketing is working or not - if customers are buying increasing amounts of your product, ROI will go up. If you're losing volume, price or customers, ROI will go down. It's that simple.

So here's a recipe for all of you out there planning for this year's marketing activities, marketing strategies and marketing budgets. It's time to rethink those campaigns and brochures that aren't working.

It's clear that if you want to get more bang for the buck, your marketing dollars need take a look what your company can do with Promotional Products. Have you given your sales-reps a good catalog to choose from? Have you stocked up on the latest in giveaways and personalized gifts?

Now is the time - there is greater need to meet in person, press the flesh and build relationships the old fashioned way - with a gift, or Promotional Product.
