Waterproofing membranes have evolved a lot in the past couple of years. That said there always looks like numerous products on the market. Therefore what makes a waterproofing membrane powerful, and how do you recognize what is the ideal product for you?

What is the ideal waterproofing membrane?

A perfect waterproofing membrane should provide the following qualities:
1. Guard the substrate from moisture
2. High elongation before breaking point
3. Dry rapidly (and does not skin)
4. Dry without being stressed
5. Be able to be bonded (eg. with tiles)
5. Have high chemical and abrasion resistance
6. Be simple to use
7. Be harmless to deal with and non-toxic

These days, there are two typical categories of waterproofing membranes: acrylic and polyurethane. Polyurethane has a higher tensile strength and stretches much. However, they generally have solvent based things that are less reliable to use. Bonding to them can also be difficult. Acrylic often takes much longer to dry and is little resistive to abrasion and certain main chemicals.

Good quality waterproofing membranes need to provide a waterproof hurdle but it must also cope with anticipated mobility. Such motion, for example that at joints, can simply be accommodated with bond breakers. They make the waterproofing membranes to stretch instead of snap, making the most of the expandable attribute of the material. The fundamental idea is much like an elastic band. A long part of elastic will stretch out further before snapping than a smaller piece of the same material.

The difficulty with unusual motion-
The problem lies in how much the waterproofing membrane needs to expand to hold sudden splits (those not processed with bond breakers). Because the extension (mobility) is more than the elongation (stretching) capability of the waterproofing membrane, it will lead to a tear in the membrane potentially causing leakages.

Therefore essentially if the movement is more than the waterproofing membrane can extend, then it will snap. A bond breaker allows the membrane to expand lots more.

THE SOLUTION-
Installing the needed bond breakers is usually essential. However the style of the membrane can also help. A waterproofing membrane that is better with much stretching potential means that it is a lot forgiving and the bond breakers can be narrower. Actually the higher the elasticity, the later it will break and the greater the membrane’s internal (or tensile) strength, the more likely it will de-bond and stretch out rather than snap. Remember that it is always great to install a bond breaker in all parts that are about to move.

Basement waterproofing membranes once completed turn very tough since the water pressure is from the negative side, the trouble arises when a waterproofing membrane cannot stand up to hydrostatic pressure from within just the substrate and as a result fails. Water may go into a basement by several means like through joints, walls, or floors. Several basement waterproofing membranes address these issues.
