Teeth are created from different layers. The hard outer layer helps for chewing the food. While porous inner dentine layer that stays beneath gum line contains pulp chamber, blood vessels and bonding tissue that holds the teeth with gums and tooth’s vital nerves. When these nerves beneath the tooth line stimulated and comes in with direct touch of hot or cold food creates sensitivity. Sensitive teeth, also known as dentine hypersensitivity is mainly caused by cavities, gum recession and tooth decay. However, it could easily be prevented by taking little care of the teeth regularly by brushing twice or thrice a day and cleaning gaps between the teeth with special brush like Colgate interdental brush.

A dentine layer that usually resides below the gum line is covered with thousands of tiny pores and tubules. The ends of these tiny tubes are covered with enamel. When this enamel gets damage due to cavities or teeth decay, the tubules became open and the nerves come in direct touch with food taken. It cause sensitivity or pain against hot or cold water, sweet drinks, sugary food and even while brushing. Tooth decay and cavities are the common cause for such problems while some other are over brushing and brushing with extreme pressure, bad bite, clenching, grinding teeth, fractured or broken teeth and use of some harsh chemical for teeth whitening. Many of these are natural and unavoidable while some of the causes like cavities and tooth decay can be prevented or cured in early stages to prevent teeth sensitivity. There is no permanent solution for the problem however some clinical treatment and better home care can be effective in relieving teeth sensitivity.

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day and not more than thrice a day with desensitizing toothpaste.

• Opening of the gum and damaging enamel is mostly caused by the tooth diseases like cavities and decay. This problem actually starts with the food residual that collected between the gaps of the teeth and creates black sticky substance called plaque. On hardening this plaque converts into tarter and becomes more difficult to remove from the teeth. Moreover, this plaque offers ideal place for bacteria to grow inside the mouth. These bacteria consume sweet substance from the food and release acids that cause cavity, tooth decay and gum problem. Plaque also creates bad breath problem.

• Use Fluoride containing toothpaste and antibacterial mouthwash. Fluoride acts against the bacteria inside the mouth and also reverses the effect caused by the harmful acids on the teeth. While antibacterial mouthwash reaches to the most critical part of the denture like back of the teeth where normal brush cannot reach and prevent the bacterial growth.
