SOCIAL networking sites are getting to be very popular these past few years. In fact, even American politicians have found social media (which evolved along side with Information Technology) as a useful medium in reaching voters especially during elections.

IT’s social networking sites also bring people closer. It allows us to know more people and get to be their friends later on.

Another feature of these social network sites is the ability to store uploaded images, messages, videos and other stuffs. Some of them also have instant messaging capabilities. Gaming is also one of its top features. Just like any other innovations, it also has its disadvantages.

Nuisance at Work

There is a growing concern among employers about their employees getting busy accessing these sites. There are even reports that some of these offices have prohibited their employees from opening social networking sites during working hours, unless their work requires them to.

Robert Half Technology, a US-based Information Technology recruitment group recently administered a survey on this particular concern.

Of the 100 respondents, 54 actually said that social networking is strictly prohibited in their workplace. According to the same respondents, the prohibition forms part of the company policy.

On the other hand, 19 respondents said that their bosses are allowing them to use these social networks for as long as it is “for business purposes”. There are 16 respondents who said that they can actually access social networking sites for a limited period. Ten of the respondents, who were given the same questionnaire, said that their employers don’t mind them accessing social network sites for as long as they deliver what is expected of them. One didn’t bother to answer.

Hampering Productivity

Corporate executives have expressed apprehension over matters concerning productivity of their employees. According to them, it contributes largely to reduced work efficiency and at times causes delay in the delivery of results.

They also describe social networking as “very addictive”, based on what they claimed as their observation on their employees, who are spending hours playing online games, chatting online, looking for friends among many other amenities available in these sites.

Their conclusion --- social networking sites adversely affect work, reduce employees’ productivity and pulls the company down.

Losing Heavily, but Unknowingly

At a time when multi-tasking is required of employees, social networking sites tend to distract them, thus falling short of what they are expected and paid to do.

University of California’s School of Information and Computer Science administered a separate study, which says that productivity dips alongside with quality of work every time an employee is distracted from what he or she is doing.

The same study showed that of most of the office personnel they interviewed requires three minutes to get back on track over a minor workload and 10 minutes to get back on track for a major workload. The more distractions, the more minutes are lost, which translates to revenue losses.

Business research firm Basex made some computation on how much is lost over this type of distraction. The figure was placed at a whopping $ 588 billion per annum, an amount which could hurt what is already an ailing US economy. GP
