Researchers have found that though most smokers are aware of the ill consequences of smoking, they just cannot get rid of their addiction as they found quitting smoking quite hard. The smokers are also concerned about the huge financial loss they are causing to themselves by smoking, for a cigarette pack costs a lot. But it is the addiction caused by the nicotine present in the cigarettes and the psychological comfort that restrain the smokers from quitting smoking.
However, nothing is impossible and if you give an honest attempt to quit smoking yourself, no addiction can pull you back. Take it as a challenge nurturing the only thought that the effort you are giving to quit smoking will add some extra years in your life span.
Try out the following effective tips to succeed in your attempt.
[Tip 1] Make a division on a paper and on one side note down all the things that attract you towards smoking. The other side will contain the things that you dislike about smoking, like its negative effects on your health, family and work. Be bold and incorporate the negative feedback of your friends and families regarding smoking in the list. Now, when the negative side outnumbers the positive side, you are ready to quit.
[Tip 2] Prepare another list by noting down what is restricting you from quitting smoking and next to each cause, list the options of overcoming that very challenge. For instance, if you feel that smoking works as a great stress buster for you, your option will be: “Unwind while taking a five-minute walks instead”. The more you can provide options to the causes, more you will approach your goal.
[Tip 3] Decide your date of quitting smoking and prepare a “quit date contract”, duly signed by you and some other supportive witness.
[Tip 4] Write down on an index card all the probable reasons behind your quitting of cigarettes, which you will keep all the time. You can start it like: “My wife, my husband, my daughter…”
[Tip 5] When you are preparing to quit smoke, abstain from buying cigarettes cartons and buy one pack at a time. Do not carry more than three cigarettes with you. This will lower the availability of cigarettes when you are craving to smoke and will make you smoke fewer cigarettes.
[Tip 6] Think about some effective options in which you will engage yourself, when your craving is on rise. It is recommended to take a walk, play with your pet, take a nap, practice deep breathing, kiss your child or partner, make love or get yourself a cup of tea or coffee.
[Tip 7] While at workplace, get involved in playing a game of solitaire during the cigarette break.
[Tip 8] Always carry some toothpicks of cinnamon-flavored and suck one, whenever your cigar craving hits.
[Tip 9] Put the money that you are likely to spend on cigarettes in a glass jar and then buy some stuff with those bucks that you have craved for long. This will offer you unique satisfaction.
[Tip 10] Shift from your cigarette habit to a nut habit for nuts will give the same oral and physical sensations that you get while smoking.
[Tip 11] With the nearing of your “quit date”, throw away all the stuffs that may stimulate your urge of smoking, like lighters, leftover cigarettes, ashtrays, cigarette holders, etc.
[Tip 12] Consult an acupuncturist, for auricular acupuncture can reduce cigarette craving quite effectively.
Above all, it is your self-restrain that matters the most.
