When my rankings stayed low, I was told that I needed help with seo. After I realized I need seo help, I didn’t know where to get it. I did some research and found that it's possible to do it by yourself! I have tried these tips on my own website, and so far I've seen improving results. These might work for you.

Visibility

Check to make sure your website is visible to search spiders. Take a look at the site layout to make sure areas such as the sidebar and footer are placed where they should be. The content should be placed first and the header area should describe what the site is about.

Another part of search engine optimization not known by beginners is a robot.txt file containing the files and folders the spiders should follow when crawling the website. It's recommended to use this to save bandwidth by refusing content such as images to be indexed. Be warned, though: if the robot.txt file contains a line refusing a directory of images, the crawler will not index them and will remove references to the images, which also prevents other users from linking directly to the images from a search.

Check for Duplicate Content

Make sure there isn't another copy of your content online. Not only is someone stealing content you've worked hard to publish, but it can also damage your website's reputation. If the search engine finds the same copy of the article, it will take priority on the latest version of the article. This is common on splogs, which aggregates content from other blogs without permission. If duplicate content is found, take the appropriate actions by contacting the webmaster directly or contact the webmaster's hosting for options to request a removal.

Use Sitemaps

In the past, meta tags were used by spiders to identify websites with a description and matching keywords. While the practice is still encouraged today, an XML sitemap is the latest strategy for site optimization. A sitemap looks like a simple page readable to the human eye, containing links to the content to be indexed the next time a spider visits the site. This keeps the spider from having to crawl every single page the next time it indexes a page. When using a sitemap, the number of links should be no more than 50 to prevent errors.

Additional Tips

These few minor tips do not correct existing problems, but rather improve your website's ranking. The next time someone says "I need SEO help," refer to this. Even for experienced webmasters need help with SEO.

- While using images attract visitors, be careful not to use too many as it can cause problems for the spider and the server the site is hosted on.

- Pay attention to how the web address is presented when promoting the site. For example: use example.com instead of example.com, and choosing whether the slash at the end is displayed or not.

- Though a tip for advanced webmasters, consider caching the website. This improves the speed of the website itself through heavy visitor traffic and the rate the crawler scans the website.
