The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

The article offers a brief presentation of the fastest production car in the world – the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the result of Volkswagen’s financial effort, time consuming and manufacturing effort to create a car capable of becoming the fastest production car in the world. Back in 2005, the original Veyron became the fastest car, with a top speed of 408 km/h, beating the Koenigsegg CRR that set the world record at 387.37 km/h. Later on, the SSC manufactured the Ultimate Aero TT that beat the Veyron record, establishing a top speed of 412.28 km/h. Now, Bugatti launched the Veyron Super Sport, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 431 km/h.

All of these manufacturers have problems with creating extreme cars that can safety travel at such high speeds, and it is not cheap to engineer from scratch a road car capable of passing 400 km/h. Bugatti and SSC are the only two manufacturers with cars available to travel above this speed and Bugatti’s latest record has now pushed to a whopping 431.072 km/h – which is a living statement of what the manufacturer is all about.

Adding almost 20 km/h to a world speed record, after 120 years of human engineering in the field, it is a wonderful achievement. It is very difficult to believe it is even possible to do that and still be able to viably sell such vehicles by making a nice profit. The SS is just as fast as the Maglev train from Shanghai. At the same time, it is 100 km/h faster than the latest 2010 Moto GP models that are capable of outputting 250 bhp. In 2006, a test was done using Jenson Button’s V 10 Honda F1 in order to break the land speed record, it “only” managed to achieve 400 km/h.

In two way average speeds over different distances it clocked 397.36 km/h and 397.48 km/h. On one run down a measured mile, it passed over the 400 km/h mark. The first edition of the Veyron could easily outrun any Formula One car, even a Ferrari. The funny thing about this car is that it is electronically limited to 415 km/h because of the limits of the tires, it has nothing to do with the actual car. Only five cars were manufactured, complete with identical everything, including paint. The cars were already sold to undisclosed very rich people.

How were all this figures accomplished? Bugatti took the original Veyron that had 1,001 bhp and added another 200. In addition, the car was aerodynamically modified in order to be able to resist such incredible high speeds. The innovative W16 light alloy engine develops a phenomenal 736 kW (987 bhp) at 6000/min and is installed in the mid-engine position ahead of the car's rear axle. Because of the W configuration - essentially two V8 engines grafted together, the 64 valve, 7,993 cc engine remains very compact at 710 millimeters long and 767 mm wide. The Veyron produced an almost unfeasibly strong mid-range, unleashing 1,250 Newton-metres via the intelligent all-wheel-drive - the Veyron Super Sport has an additional 20% more pulling power at useable speeds.

As far as the future is concerned, the next model that will be the successor of the Veyron line is the 16 C Galiber at a hefty price of $1.470.000, an automobile that will most likely be the fastest and most exclusive four door car in the world ever produced. The Galibier comes with a Tourbillon wristwatch by Parmigiani which doubles as the clock on the dashboard.
