Women who have the habit of smoking should try to quit once they are pregnant. They should try to quit it within the first trimester. Women who had quit smoking during first trimester have less chances of getting any negative effect on her baby. A baby whose mother quits smoking during first stage of pregnancy can have all the natural developments.

Risk increases when the women continue to smoke in the advanced stages of pregnancy. A woman who cannot quit smoking completely should try to reduce the number of cigarettes she smoked during the day. By reducing the number of cigarettes, she can reduce the consequences for her baby and herself.

Women who cannot reduce or quit smoking themselves should consult with a doctor or a midwife. They can help out with the ways that are needed for quitting smoking. One can also contact the stop-smoking group who help people to quit smoking. Any woman who wants to give birth to a healthy baby should avoid smoking during pregnancy.
