This month’s spotlight remedy is Bryonia alba. It also goes by some other names, like “white bryony” and “wild hops.” Bryonia is a climbing perennial herb that produces small white flowers and berries. It is common in southern England and other parts of Europe. The root of this plant is dangerously poisonous. Since it is the part that is used in homeopathic medicine, you need to purchase a remedy from a reputable source, rather than attempting to prepare it yourself.
Let’s take a look at the general symptom picture of the Bryonia patient before we move on to the specific conditions that it could help:
• Dry mucous membranes
• Very thirsty for cold water
• Pain upon any movement
• Pain that’s sudden and sharp
• Irritable
• Desire to go home and/or to be alone
The Bryonia patient’s symptoms become worse with movement or when the weather’s hot. Putting continuous pressure on the affected body part can help the person feel better. Cool air also helps.3
Bursitis
Bursitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs in and around your joints called “bursae.” They are there to lubricate and cushion pressure spots in the bones, tendons and muscles of the joints.
If you’re afflicted with the pain of bursitis around your elbow, knee or foot, then Bryonia could help you. Specifically, the bursitis patient who could benefit from this remedy has a swollen, red joint that feels hot. Stiffness and pain are greatly aggravated when the person moves the affected body part. The pain can be described as “tearing.” The person should take a 30C dose twice a day.
Broken Bones
While broken bones need emergency medical attention, homeopathic remedies could help during the healing process. The stabbing pain will come on suddenly and will be aggravated by any type of movement. The first homeopathic remedies for broken-bone pain are Arnica and Symphytum. If those don’t work for the pain and other symptoms, then try Bryonia. If the pain is moderate, give a 12C dose. If it’s severe, then use a 30C dose. Do this every 30 minutes. If there’s no improvement after six doses, you need to rethink the prescription.
Common Cold
You’ll want to keep Bryonia in mind come the next cold season. If you want to avoid the over-the-counter medications that just mask the symptoms, consider homeopathy.
As usual, this remedy is not for all cold sufferers. Specific characteristics must be present to come up with a prescription of Bryonia. These are: dry nose, throat, mouth and lips; extreme thirst; sore, swollen eyelids; sneezing that brings up mucus and causes pain in the forehead area; symptoms that travel downward toward the chest; irritability; desire to be alone; and anxiety about work. Use a 30C dose.6
Acute Cough
An acute cough is one that lasts less than three weeks. The causes behind coughs are numerous, so let’s just look at the symptoms specific to a Bryonia patient. The cough will be hard and dry. It usually begins as a tickling sensation in the throat. The person will crave cold water or a warm beverage. The cough is often accompanied by a sharp pain in the chest and sometimes a headache, which worsens when coughing. In older people, the force of the coughing could cause urinary incontinence. The cough is aggravated by eating and drinking, even leading to vomiting. It’s also made worse by a change of temperature (entering a warm room after being outside) and any kind of movement.
Bryonia could also help with “pleurisy” and bronchitis, both of which are lung conditions involving inflammation. It could also be useful in whooping cough. Try a 12C or 30C dose two times a day. If your cough is severe, or you think that you might have one of the aforementioned conditions, see your doctor.7
Headache
Many of us are afflicted with this common ailment. But don’t worry; Bryonia could help, depending on your symptoms. This remedy should be considered if it feels like your head is splitting open. The pain is often described as “bursting.” The person will want to remain still, because the tiniest movement will make the headache much worse. Again, this person will be very irritable and thirsty for cold water. He or she might seem worried about work-related issues. Use a 30C dose; if the symptoms are severe, give the same dose once an hour for several hours.
Measles
The measles is a disease caused by a virus. It normally causes a red, itchy rash, plus fever, sore throat and runny nose and eyes. If you think that you have this illness, you must see your doctor. If not treated properly, measles can lead to serious complications. However, if you get the okay from your doctor, you can use homeopathic remedies to help your body recover. Consider Bryonia if the predominant symptoms are fever (up to 102°F/39°C), extreme thirst, grumpiness and dry skin. The person will not want to move, as this worsens his or her symptoms. The person might also feel achy. Use a 30C dose once every two to three hours until the symptoms improve.
If the symptoms are severe, use one 200C dose of Bryonia. Monitor the patient for a change in condition. If there is no improvement, repeat the dose. Remember to take the patient to see a doctor if there is no change or if the symptoms get worse. If it’s you that’s suffering from the measles, it’s best to have someone else sit with you.
