Valencia is an industrialized province of Spain. It is also popular as the city of Science and Arts. A feather in the cap; it is one of the preferred destinations of most of the tourists visiting Spain. Spain’s third largest city; Valencia has a long history behind it and it dates back to the era of Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. Even to this day, some locals of Valencia practice some of the traditions left behind by these civilizations. Valencia has many places which are of interest for tourists. Now let us visit the famous building called ‘Plaza del Mercado’.

Plaza del Mercado is one of the best examples of beautiful Gothic architecture. In fact many tourists are of the opinion that this is one of the epic buildings of Valencia. This monumental building houses three different buildings within it.

Silk market:

The famous silk market of Spain is located in this building. This part of the building is believed to have been built in the 15th Century. That was the time when Valencia was bustling with enormous trade and commerce. Silk was largely produced here. For the convenience of trading, a silk market was established. The silk market has three floors. The ground floor is called contact hall. Over that is the Chapel and the merchants’ goal on the last floor. Apart from this, there is a court yard where oranges are grown. The chapel is beautifully decorated. Much need not be said about this building because UNESCO has declared it as a monumental Humanity’s heritage building.

Central market:

The next building is the central market which was built in 1914. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. are sold here. Tour operators suggest that people should visit the Central Market in the mornings rather than the evenings.

Church:

The next building found in Plaza del Mercado is the most beautiful church. This church is known by two different names viz., Santos Juanes church and San Juan del Mercado church. Believed to have been built in the 14th Century, this church adorns beautiful Gothic architecture. According to historians, in the year 1552, the church suffered extensive damage due to a fire accident and in later years it was completely refurbished. Apart from beautiful works of sculpture, the fresco around the dome of the church is most attractive and tour guides always draw the attention of every tourist to this wonderful work of art.
