This is why robots are relied upon in manufacturing, research and development of many important items in our society.
Robots can be equipped with specialized parts and devices that would enable them to perform specific tasks that they are best suited to accomplish. While we are far from being able to buy customizable commercial robots, we are not restrained from planning what we are going to get.

Of course, before you plan a robot, you have to know what kinds of technology are available at the moment. Once you know the range of capabilities that technology can give to your own robot, you can finally decide what you would want your robot to do. Aesthetics is the first priority when it comes to having your own personal robot. Whether you want one that mimics a human or one that looks and breathes of cold hard steel, the external frame of a robot matters a lot.
Humanoid looking robots can have synthetic skins made of plastic or silicon in order to recreate a similar sensation of human flesh. Of course, those who would want a little more detail could invest in a robot that has thermal devices planted near the surface of the skin in order to achieve a sense of warmth when touching the robot.
On the other hands, those looking for a little more toughness might appreciate the great abundance of options for robot armor. Since robots are assembled, you can practically choose to have any existing armor plating for the body. Titanium is a good choice since it is both light and durable. Without sacrificing mobility, titanium provides robots with protection that matches that of heavier bulkier armors. Having a light frame is important since mobility gives a robot a good range of functions. No matter how tough a robot is, if it cannot move fast enough, it would only be a burden.
What Your Robot is For
Whether you just need another maid or require a bodyguard that does not know sleep or rest, robots can do almost any job. Robots that focus less on combat can be equipped with other functionalities that would increase their purposes. Robot butlers for one can be programmed with various protocols to enable the robot to handle the many tasks required of a butler.
Instead of specializing in only one task, robot butlers do not need the specific programming and devices similar to that of robot chefs. On the other hand, creating a robot chef means that other functionalities are sacrificed in order to increase the specialization of the robot.
Of course, these are all speculations. Owning, customizing and using a personal robot is still far from our current reality. Even in speculation, there are a lot of important factors that are still not discussed. From fuel source to artificial intelligence, the factors and rules governing the capabilities and functions that a robot can have is virtually endless; we can only hope to see them in our lifetime.
