Enrolling in an American ESL academy allows you to learn English in both of these manners. In an American English language program you can expect to take courses that cover aspects of written and spoken English. Many academies offer exam preparation courses too, and may help you find living accommodations.
Listening and Oral Practice
Your courses at an American ESL academy will likely be comprehensive. An academy will teach spoken English, including listening and pronunciation. This will often entail speaking aloud with partners daily. Your teacher will work to identify your personal pronunciation difficulties and explain American pronunciation technically while providing activities for practice. Not only will you be listening to your fellow students and teacher in class, living in America will give you endless opportunities to practice your listening skills.
Writing and Reading Comprehension
An American English language program will also include courses in written English such as grammar and writing. Your writing courses may teach style as well as incorporate the grammar you’ll be learning, as writing and receiving feedback are great ways to learn and practice grammar. Vocabulary may be taught as a separate subject or as part of a reading class, which would also include skills such as using context clues to understand new words and identify literary devices. A study of vocabulary will often include words, idioms and slang you are likely to encounter on an examination such as the TOEFL. Many academies also offer courses on American culture, which can help you get used to a new country.
TOEFL and Other Test Preparation
All of these courses will help you improve your English, which will help you if you are preparing for the TOEFL or the iBTOEFL, but an American ESL academy may offer courses specifically for exam preparation as well.
If you’re planning to attend an American university you’ll most likely be required to achieve a minimum score on the TOEFL or iBTOEFL prior to enrollment. An American English language program may offer courses specifically geared toward improving your TOEFL score, including instruction in all the areas covered in the regular English language courses with a focus on the question and answer structure used on the TOEFL as well as test-taking strategies. There may be a testing center at the academy.
Housing and Activities
An American academy of ESL may provide services to help you get situated. They may help you find living accommodations, too. Depending on which academy you attend and its location, there are several options that may be available. You may even be able to live with an American family in their home. The academy may offer dormitories or be able to suggest apartments that are near the facility. The academy may help you find a roommate if you are planning to live in an apartment. Additionally, the academy may plan field trips for students to get to know the area and go sightseeing, get to know each other and just have fun in a foreign country.
