I read with some concern a story in one of the papers of a disabled person who has been stopped from using his mobility scooter in the lift in the block of flats in which he lives! Mobility scooters provide daily living aids to people with disabilities. Apparently they say that the weight of the scooter and him combined is too great for the lift, so suddenly is this man to be a 'prisoner' in his flat? Shouldn't the company instead of stopping him using his scooter find ways to upgrade the lift to accommodate the two together?

It amazes me that both private landlords and councils can have disabled people living in flats or buildings without making sure that they have complete and easy access. It is always going to be problematical if someone is living in a property an for some reason becomes disabled and then has to rely on powerchairs or mini scooter to be able to get around. It may well be that the building they are in cannot be adapted to cater for their revised needs and then both landlord and tenant are in a difficult position, but that is very different from the situation where some with a problem who has been living in the accommodation for sometime and using aids to get about only suddenly to be told that is no longer possible. Suddenly trapped how would they feel, in the case I mentioned earlier it would be virtually impossible for the person with the scooter to use the lift separately from his scooter so surely the landlords should find some way to upgrade the lift to allow the person to travel in wheelchairs.

This sort of problem, I envisage, will only become more acute as the population grows older between now and 2025 the population of the UK over 55 continues to grow and lots of those people will need to use mobility scooters at some stage in their lives either through disability or illness and if they are living in flats they cannot just be told they cant use the product and both private landlords, councils and housing associations need to be more aware of a growing problem and plan for it before it is too late.
