Whitby Goth Weekend grows in popularity each year. People of all ages, and from all over the coutry flock to the town of Whitby for this bi-annual spectacular event.
Whitby Goth Weekend is a twice yearly event (April and October) was founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire. Initially it was held once a year up until 1997 when it was then decided to hold it biannually.

What started primarily as a weekend with a gothic theme chosen probably for Whitby because of its Dracula connection (Bram Stoker holidayed in Whitby and drew his inspiration for the novel of Dracula from the Abbey ruins and the 199 steps), it has now snowballed to the extent that the whole town seems to be invaded by ‘Goths’, a friendly group of people who dress in gothic costume and parade the streets or attend different events around the town such as fairs, markets, even charity football matches! There has been a huge increase in the number of music events taking place with some high profile bands headlining certain events. Such has the popularity of the weekend spread that nowadays it is common to find whole families dressed in their costumes from babies and toddlers in pushchairs to grandmas and grandads. Not only is it very popular in this country but many visitors from all over the world gather here!

There are a plethora of shops dedicated to the sale of both ‘Gothic’ and associated styles selling clothing, jewellery, memorabilia, statues etc. At the Whitby Pavilion in the Exhibition Hall there are Bizarre Bazaars held where Gothic clothing, footwear, ornaments, handbags etc. are for sale giving the ‘black market’ a whole new meaning.

As a result of its popularity there is a spin-off unofficial group Darkdaisy promotions which also hold a number of events twice a year, also in April and October.

There has been a diversity over the past couple of years in so much that there has been an element of Industrial, Psy-trance, Dubstep and Steampunk, This in turn has led to some more unusual costumes incorporating goggles, scientific equipment, sci-fi inspired clothing and punk outfits.

It is a photographers dream to be able to see the ‘Goths’ parading around the town and also the different events. Hundreds of images are available on the web and the local newspaper, The Whitby Gazette publishes photos after each ‘weekend’ of the characters in their various costumes . Hearses are likely to be parked around the town decorated in purple or red ribbons customised by their ‘Gothic’ owners. The Register Office is accustomed to brides and grooms in period dress ‘tying the knot’.

Their intention is to have harmless fun and there is no association with the ‘dark arts’ or Satan whatsoever. It is not meant as an unchristian event, merely a group of people with the same fascination in costume and music coming together and socialising with one another.

This year, at the beginning of the Whitby Gothic Weekend, a low mist descended on the Whitby West Cliff and the East Cliff. This shrouded the lower part of the Abbey and also the Whalebone Arch, thus making for some very atmospheric photographs. The early morning risers were not only able to capture this eerie weather phenomenon on camera but also some early morning rising ‘Goths’. On the Sunday mornings of the Goth weekends, many of the ’Goths’ gather in the churchyard of St. Marys near the Abbey as well as a large number of photographers and film-makers!
