White has become a wardrobe staple as much as black. And to cash in on this season's hottest "wearing white" trend, you'll need to pick up a pair of white jeans. Skinny, straight-leg and cropped white denim can be seen on just about all body types and in a variety of settings.
Plus that old adage of wearing white after Labor Day doesn't really apply anymore, so this is a piece of apparel that can take you into fall and can be pulled off in the spring as well.
Floaty, tunic and bohemian-style tops work best with fitted white bottoms. If you are afraid to go with a skinny or straight-leg style, try a slimming bootcut version.
If you are a little concerned about white denim not being as forgiving, you can still pull off the look with a white trouser or cropped linen pants in the same color. Or you can opt for white shorts for a fresh summer look without committing to the trend. When working this wonderful white look, here are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind.
# Remember, don't try to squeeze into a smaller pair, even if you know they are "your size." White isn't as forgiving as darker colors, even in denim. Going for the label rather than the fit will lead to unsightly bumps and bulges. The right fit is key to making this look work.
# Throw on a long cardigan or blazer over a neutral shade with some bold accessories. Try those with metallic finishes.
"A cool look is to pair whites with neutral oatmeal shades for a resort chic look," said Penny Bolton, owner of Penny's Closet and Phase II.
# If you have a medium to dark complexion, take advantage and try the white-on-white by wearing a fitted T-shirt with your white jeans. Play up the combo with metallic accessories, especially burnished gold and bronze chains.
"Another great look is to keep it tonal, white on white is spectacular. I team it with a silver shoe and silver accessories," Bolton said.
# Stay away from white stilettos. There are plenty of other fun and fashionable footwear this summer, so pair your white jeans with gladiator style sandals, colorful jellies or flats, espadrilles and wedges, pumps and strappy heels.
# Pair white jeans with summer's hottest bold colors, such as turquoise, yellow, pink, red, orange and lime green. You can do this with fitted tanks, breezy babydoll tops, comfy tees and classic button-down shirts.
# Put on a longer, brightly colored ruffled top with denim jacket. Add gold jewelry.
# Add a striped red or blue shirt, especially with a boxier, boat neckline, for a nautical feel.
# Add a structured black blouse or tee with black pumps for a classy combination. Play up the pairing with some bright accessories.
"I teamed my white jeans with a black sleeveless scrunch turtleneck long-length top with a Brighton silver belt and heels. When you wear a belt, I suggest wearing spectacular earrings and the belt teamed with a watch and a bracelet of a grouping," Bolton suggested.
