Diabetes can affect many parts of the body, including the kidneys. In healthy kidneys, many tiny blood vessels filter waste products from your body. The blood vessels have holes that are big enough to allow tiny waste products to pass through into the urine but are still small enough to keep useful products (such as protein and red blood cells) in the blood. High levels of sugar in the blood can damage these vessels if Diabetes is not controlled.

Diabetes Mellitus is divided into three types in clinic and they are type I Diabetes, type II Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes.

Type I Diabetes

Type I Diabetes is an autoimmune disease and it is caused by the incapacity of islet cell, the major function of which is to secrete insulin. Insulin displays a role in the utilization of glucose in our body. Because of the incapacity of islet cell, insulin can not be generated and as a result, glucose in our body can not be used effectively, leading to the increase of blood glucose.

Type I Diabetes is more common in youngsters. Once diagnosed with type I Diabetes, it is very hard for sufferers to lower blood glucose by doing exercises or taking medicines, so diabetics need to inject insulin regularly. The three outstanding features of type I Diabetes are extreme thirst, hungry, frequent urination and weight losing.

Type II Diabetes

Compared with type I Diabetes, type II Diabetes is more common in our daily life and it is caused by the insufficiency of insulin in our body. For type II Diabetes sufferers, taking some glucose-lowering medicines and doing some physical exercises will be helpful in controlling blood sugar. Compared with type I Diabetes, the above three characteristics are not obvious.

This can cause kidney disease, which is also called nephropathy. If the damage is bad enough, your kidneys could stop working and develop to Renal Failure. According to the statistics of US, about 40% of Renal Failure is caused by Diabetes and in China it is 15% and is still rising.

For patients with Diabetic Nephropathy, the kidneys are in the state of high perfusion, high filtration and high pressure, thus causing glomerulosclerosis. In order to control the illness condition of Diabetes, we have to effectively regulate the blood sugar, blood fat and blood pressure. The medicine for Diabetic Nephropathy are ACEI and ARB. One kind of it is used or both are used in combination. These medicine play an important role in controlling blood pressure, lowering proteinuria and protecting the kidneys and are the medications for Diabetes realized in the world.

There are also suitable Chinese medicine in treating Diabetic Nephropathy. Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital in China uses Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy to treat Diabetic Nephropathy. It is a kind of externally used medicine. It avoided the side effects of oral taking medicine and will not go through the digestive system, so the absorption rate has been greatly improved. There are mainly four functions of this kind of treatment that is expanding blood vessels so as to improve blood circulation, anti coagulation, anti inflammation and repair and degrading extracellular matrix deposited on the basement membrane. After the internal environment of the body has been improved, we can use stem cells to repair the damaged beta cells of the islet so as to make it secrete insulin normally.
