It is hard to find good Indie films these days, unless you are looking at the right places. Now-a-days, you have everyone in their mother making a feature length or short film.

It is hard to find good Indie films these days, unless you are looking at the right places. Now-a-days, you have everyone in their mother making a feature length or short film. No longer is it the craftsmanship of a creative, underdog genius who has been making 8mm film since they were 5. With the help of new technology, anyone and everyone is able to make films, with good quality footage and lighting; however, their stories, acting, and dialogs are less than the grade F. Certain professions should be dealt with certain individual. A plumber can not do a job of an accountant, and visa-versa. Even in the creative art field, one should not step into another one’s shoes unless the shoe fits. Just because you love ‘watching’ movies, doesn’t mean you will be good at ‘making’ movies.
In the beginning when certain important celebrities started film festivals like Sundance and Canne film festival, they wanted to bring the best of the unknown world. Once the world got out, just within five years every major city in America was having its own ‘important’ festivals. This was a good and a bad thing. It gave the good filmmakers a chance to showcase their work which would have never seen the light of day; but it also flooded festival with garbage that lost the importance of the film festivals. Now, just in my city alone, there are 2-3 different film festival each year, and each year the number increases. I went to couple of them, and to tell you the truth, I had to walk out of them within 10-15 minutes of being their.
Most of these young filmmakers and actors act like they are at a red-carpet ceremony for the academy awards, and they already feel like their movie has made a million dollar. Just the act at the film festival completely turned me off. If you want respect and fame, you must act like a normal human being, not god. Not only the class act is there, but the films are just as bad as the act. Most of the filmmakers today do not give special attention to lighting, sound, camera angles and editing. Because these thing are not being taught property in classes, and it’s easily available on the web, everyone just jumps into making a movie without learning the basics and its foundation. The most important aspect of a film is its sound, and most of the films not only had a hissing sound, but the difference of audio was easily detected from one scene to another.
As far as lighting is concerned, there was none. Filmmakers today, even with the technology of DSLR cameras, with 35-50mm lens capability, can light a scene decently, because they do not know how. Filmmakers today must learn to build a foundation, before making their house of dreams. One of the best places to learn such craft is your local community college. Most community colleges today have basic editing, sound production and lighting classes for emerging you tube filmmakers.
