Why am I doing all this? Will I be doing all this all my life? Is there nothing more to life than this? What is the purpose of my life? – It is not surprising that these and many such questions plague the minds of many people in the twenty-first century. The world economy has become so consumer oriented and profit oriented that businesses think about nothing else except to survive in a cutthroat competition by offering more and more things to consumers and in convincing them to believe that these are necessities of life without which their life will be incomplete.

The result is that on one side of the world – the richer side – millions of people go out of their way to buy things they could really very well do without. While on the other side of the world, where the goods are manufactured – the poorer side – millions of people sacrifice sleep, family time, recreation, health, and many other precious things in order to work extended hours just to make enough money to get by.

Just enough money to pay the rent; just enough money to pay the bills; just enough money to pay the fees; just enough money to buy food; just enough money for transport; yet not enough money to get out of debt. What else can a person in such a situation think except to ask himself, or herself, ‘Why am I doing all this?” “Is there no alternative to this?” “Will I ever get out of this rut?” “What is the purpose of my life?”

Is it not strange that people can readily answer such questions as: What is the purpose of eating? Or what is the purpose of sleeping? Or what is the purpose of working? Yet many people are confused when it comes to the question: What is the purpose of life? Fortunately, if we read Quran, it has the answer to that fundamental question:

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and Allah hath power over all things. Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are indeed Signs for men of understanding. Those who remember Allah while standing and sitting and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: (And they declare) Our Lord! Thou hast not created (all) this in vain! Glory is to Thee; save us then from the chastisement of the Fire. Our Lord! Surely whomsoever Thou admit to the Fire, him Thou hast indeed brought to disgrace, and there shall be no helpers for the unjust. Our Lord! Surely we have heard a preacher calling to the faith, saying: Believe in your Lord, so we did believe; Our Lord! Forgive us therefore our faults, blot out from us our iniquities, and take to Thyself our souls in the company of the righteous. So their Lord accepted their prayer. That I will not waste the work of a worker among you, whether male or female, the one of you being from the other; they, therefore, who fled and were turned out of their homes and persecuted in My way and who fought and were slain, I will most certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will most certainly make them enter gardens beneath which rivers flow; a reward from Allah, and with Allah is yet better reward. (Surah Aal-e-Imraan: 03; Ayahs: 189-195)

Therefore, O’ reader, ask yourself: ‘What is the purpose of my life?’ And if you do not find a satisfactory answer to this fundamental question then read Quran for the answer. And if you do not know how to read the Quran, then there it is still not problem in these modern times.
