There is nothing like potted plants to liven up your home and provide a serene splash of green to your décor. They are also beneficial to your interior environment, helping to improve the air quality in your home.

Choices, Choices, Choices:

House plants come in thousands of varieties for you to choose from. There are foliage plants, as well as flowering varieties depending on your preference. Having house plants is an opportunity to experience exotic varieties that could not survive outdoors where you actually live. Indoors you can grow everything from cactus, to palms, to ferns, to hanging plants or trees.

Location:

Any room in your home is a good place for some type of house plant. Tropical varieties enjoy bathrooms, where the steam from hot water can engulf them when you bathe. Many plants enjoy a sunny window, and there are even varieties that grow well in low or diffused light situations.

Another indoor option is terrariums, which are plants growing under glass. The glass provides the warmth they need, and condensation provides the moisture the plants need. This is really good for those who want plants, but simply do not have enough time to care for them properly.

Flowers – Real, Fake, or Alive:

If you enjoy having flowers as a part of your decorating scheme, there are many flowering house plants that are available. This can save you a lot of money over the purchase of cut flowers that have to be constantly replaced. There are miniature roses, blooming cactus, Amaryllis, peace lilies and many others that bloom indoors. You can also force flowering bulbs such as daffodils or tulips to bloom in pots in spring.

Healthy:

Plants breathe in carbon dioxide that you breathe out, and they breathe out oxygen that you breathe in. This is a perfect symbiotic relationship that provides fresher air for you to breathe inside your home. Having house plants is actually healthier for you than not having them.

Here are 4 things to consider when choosing your house plants.

1. Read up. Before choosing your houseplants, get a good house plant book. This will contain all the information you need to properly care for each plant.

2. Consider your commitment. Do not get more house plants than you have time to take care of. They depend solely on you for food, water and light.

3. Plants need light. Make sure you have a place to keep them where they receive the appropriate amount of light each day. You may have to remember to open your Duralee fabric curtains each morning as well.

4. Consider your decretive scheme. To integrate them into your decorating scheme, place them in decorative pots that compliment your décor like any other accessory you might use.

If you follow these suggestions, you can have a long and happy relationship with your house plants. Your home will be more attractive, you will breathe better, and you just might ask yourself what took you so long to get started!
