Possibly the last thing the couple considers amidst the hectic planning for the big day are the vows. The whole basis for a wedding in the first place, when pledging your life to someone vows are the foundation of that commitment. Whether you choose the traditional ‘to have and to hold’, vows or you write your own, these are the most important words you will speak in your life. The most important part of the wedding takes only a few minutes.
The idea of a wedding originates in biblical times, from when men and women would make a ‘covenant’, a promise to one another. This was usually sealed by making a sacrificial offering…luckily we no longer do that, having vows and the exchange of rings as a sign of commitment. And the words that finally seal the deal? ‘I do’. Two small simple words, but life changing nevertheless. It doesn’t even matter what the rest of the vows say. If you don’t say ‘I do’ at the end, there is no marriage. Your vows are the words that tell everyone you have a deal. These arrangements were recorded in words and drawings, the ancient version wedding photography.

The Book of Common Prayer was the first place where traditional vows were written and those original vows required the man to ‘love, cherish and worship’ his wife, whilst the woman was expected to ‘love, cherish and obey’ her husband. However due to popular protest the word ‘obey’ was removed, and is now optional. Many people now write their own vows and often use them to express their love for one another and set out a basis for their continued lives together. None of this sounds particularly romantic but when you have to say such an important thing in so few words, every word should have meaning. In years to come you may forget exactly what those words were, exactly what you wore, or who was there, so it is important to capture this beautiful moment.

Hundreds of pictures are taken of the bride getting ready, the groom and best man posing in their top hats and tails, the bride’s mother, the bridesmaids pulling silly faces at the camera. There will wedding photographers will take at least twenty photographs of the bride getting into and out of the wedding car, not to mention the amount taken with bridesmaids and the father of the bride, separately and together and numerous other combinations, and this is before the bride has even walked down the aisle! Trying to take enough photographs to include every friend and family member must use up a lot of film or space on the memory card, and of course the longest part of the day is after the ceremony, with the wedding breakfast and then dinner and dancing well into the night. Therefore, keep the wedding photographers booked well into the evening and don’t miss a single precious moment.

Such a small amount of time at the actual ceremony suggests you will only have a few memories of it and all the rest will be taken up with what people wore, what they said, and the overwhelming feelings of joy and excitement. Your wedding photographers are really a very important part of your planning. They say a picture says a thousand words, so wouldn’t you want the most important two of your life to be perfectly recorded? In years to come, you want to be able to look back over your wedding pictures and say “There. That was me doing the most important thing in my life. Saying ‘I do.’”
