Change is inevitable ... or so the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, is often quoted as having once said. Even without change, the world is an extremely complex and confusing place. Yet change is something we all have to deal with. It is a big part of life; no matter how hard we cling to the illusion of permanence, reality keeps intruding with its own ideas.

Yet change is something we all have to deal with. It is a big part of life; no matter how hard we cling to the illusion of permanence, reality keeps intruding with its own ideas. Adaptability becomes the key to survival – whether in business, social or personal affairs.
When we talk about business, the ability to adapt to changing markets is essential. Even more important is the ability to see change coming and react quickly enough to survive in today’s fiercely competitive business world. Organisations that survive are those that are adaptable to either minor shifts in trends, or huge changes in the economy. These may not necessarily be changes to your principles or missions, but they may very well be practical changes in the way you do business.
But of course, it's not just long-term that leaders need to be adaptable; leaders must also be adaptable in their daily work lives. That is, true leaders can handle sudden changes in schedules, unexpected technical problems, or a financial crisis without losing their cool. Instead they assess the situation, decide on a course of action, and go for it, while understanding they may need to alter that course tomorrow if need be.
The elusive dream of business success captures the imagination of aspiring and existing business owners everywhere. A vision of flowing profits, industry respect, thrilled customers, and a balanced life is attractive. This vision is only possible by developing habits that drive business success. And one habit of success is adaptability.
