The issue of whether or not fur should be used in fashion collections has been debated for decades and is likely to continue being a topic of contention. Behind every catwalk, with its innovative styles and silver high heels, people are having their say. But who do you think is right?
The Anti-Fur Argument
The amount of fur seen on catwalks was noticeable in 2013 fashion weeks, with 70% of all designers utilising the material in their shows. The backlash against such practices first began in the late 1970s, when the less illustrious side of the industry was revealed. Those that campaign against the use of fur in fashion cite the practice as cruel and inhumane; with the main point of contention the conditions in which animals are kept. Animals have rights too and footage of creatures being skinned alive purely for their fur is enough to shock anyone. Indeed, many anti-fur protestors believe designers use fur alongside their beautiful dresses and stylish silver high heels simply to add shock value and increase publicity.
This is even more sobering when it is considered that often, the softest fur comes from young animals that have not yet had a chance to grow and develop as they should. Furthermore, the backlash against wearing fur could be attributed to our culture. Nowadays, there is a lot more emphasis on becoming vegan, with respect for animals becoming important for many. In fact, many of those campaigning against the use of fur cite our vanity as the issue. Is it really worth an animal dying to add a garment to our wardrobe?
For Fashionable Fur
However, some of the fashion crowd see wearing fur as sustainable. It is often argued that, if people are educated properly, the practice can be carried out in a humane manner. Synthetic fur is not biodegradable, with the manufacturing process harming our environment. Those that are happy to wear fur see it as a natural resource, an eco-friendly product which may be kinder to our planet than manufactured materials. This forms the basis of the pro-fur argument, with a focus on an entirely different set of ethics. Synthetic clothing drains the world’s supply of fossil fuels and is, it is argued, entirely unnatural.
Whilst both sides may be in agreement that it is not morally right to kill animals for their fur, it has to be questioned where the line is drawn. If it is not acceptable to kill a creature for their pelt, why is it seen as normal to kill them for meat? In 2012 it was reported that worldwide sales of fur rose by over $1 billion compared to the previous year, so whatever your opinion, the debate is set to continue. Beneath the catwalks’ silky dresses, silver high heels and knee high boots there is a simmering age old debate.
