He became prominent due to these works as he transcended from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. He is well known for his diverse concepts of the above mentioned paintings and Combines. Some details about each are given below:
White Paintings: Rauschenberg created White Paintings in the year 1951using the traditional monochromatic paintings the purpose of which was to reduce paintings to the most needed nature and thus leading to a painting with possibility of pure experience. During 1953 “White Paintings” where shown in the Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery, New York. At first look they look to be majorly blank white canvas as they were described by many in different forms. Some said it to be airports of light particles and shadow. It was also felt that slightest adjustment in the lighting around it could be seen on the surface of the painting. Rauschenberg himself admitted that the surrounding of this art had an effect over the “White Paintings” as he narrated that you could probably know how many people are present inside the room by merely looking at the painting.
Black Paintings: Like the White Paintings, Black Paintings were executed on multiple panels but single colour works. Here the artist used pieces of newspaper into the art paint which meant pieces of scattered newspaper could be seen at some areas of the work while others it was not visible. This works of his was also considered as a unique experiment as not many could have dared to use such an technique that Rauschenberg happened to use.
Red Paintings: By the 1953 when Rauschenberg had experimented with White Paintings and Black Paintings series using the monochromatic paintings he then followed them up by Red Paintings. Here, he used diverse kinds paint applications of red paint, and adding up materials like wood newspaper, scrap and nails this creating a very complex substrates which also happened to be the founding stone Rauschenberg’s well known Combine series of art work.
Combines: Rauschenberg integrated trash and unique objects that interested him on the streets of New York. He picked up any object that could be used in his art work and brought them back to his studio. He believed this way he can give a surprise element into his art works and thus presented this ordinary objects as new things in his art. His series of art work called Combines where known to have Brocken down any set rules and ignoring boundaries between art and sculptures. This particular craze for Combines series of art is specifically termed to his paintings from 1954 to 1962 when he combined several normal day to day objects with painting material. One of his first works considered as Combines was a quilt sprinkled with red paint and stretched as canvas depicting wall art. It was highly criticized by media as a symbol of crime, rape and murder.
