These hats were popular amongst school boys between the periods of 1920 to 1940. Its popularity slowly declined since the introduction of the very famous baseball caps. In the early 1990’s beanie hats were back in fashion owing to popularization of cold weather sports activities. The major function of this hat is to keep the head warm and in certain patterns where the wool covers the ears keeps the ears well protected as well. They are also seen as fashion accessory and worn just to enhance one’s appearance.
Historically beanie hats were used by professionals like blue collar laborers, welders and mechanics and other tradesmen who needed to keep their hair locks back but for whom a brim wasn’t necessary. In some educational institutions students were made to wear beanies of uniform color and they were made to wear them all the time. At times when they had competitions between sororities the winning teams were given the freedom not to wear the hats for the whole year. Such traditions were soon banned.
It were not only worn as winter caps but also worn as a fashion trend in the late ninety’s. The hip hop tradition brought in this fashion where in popular hip hop artists like Eminem, Snoop Dog and 50 cent were seen sporting these hats along with other typical accessories like bling and loose baggy jeans and jerseys. This trend spread like a wild fire amongst teenagers who started wearing these hats as a part of their daily wear. It would even become an individual’s identity to a certain extent due the frequent use of these hats.
They come in various designs and patterns that suit your mood. These patterns voice your style in many ways. It enhances one’s personality and also is a good headgear for people looking for a makeover from a different style altogether. The brim can be folded and worn. Also on the side of the hat can be embroidered your name or any word that describes you or your likes. Most branded hats have the brand logos associated with the hats which also looks trendy. It can be easily worn under a helmet especially by cyclists and skateboarders during winter.
Women look exceptionally good with all kinds of beanie hats no matter what color or design. It is because of the way their long hair falls on either side of the hat that gives it a sassy look. Also it’s a great headgear to help you protect your hair from the blowing wind especially in moving vehicles. It helps keeping the hair in place for girls. Since it is rather elastic or may be even made with lycra in the modern hats, it fits all kinds of shapes and sizes of heads without loosening in the event of frequent usage. Thus it doesn’t fly off or move in any direction and ruin the hairstyle. Some of these beanie hats may also come incorporated with headphones with a wire that is connected to your player. So it does not seem very obvious that you are listening to music especially in those places where using earphones and headphones are not feasible.
