A brief history of The Strokes
The band first performed at Luna Lounge on New York’s Lower East Side, as well as at the popular Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. The booker at the Mercury Lounge, Ryan Gentles, soon quit his job to become the manager of the band. The band began to rehearse a fourteen song set, and sent a demo to the newly reformed Rough Trade Records in the UK, which led to their first release.
The band released their debut EP, The Modern Age, in 2001, the songs of which were rerecorded with slightly different lyrics and song structures for the Is This it album. This album, which produced the singles “Hard to Explain”, “Last Nite” and “Someday”, entered the UK Album Charts at number two. By 2010, it had sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.
Is This It’s follow-up, Room on Fire, was released in October 2003, achieving gold sales. This was followed in January 2006 by First Impressions of Earth, which reached number four in the US charts in addition to giving the band its first number one on the UK Album Charts. The band’s fifth album, Angles, was released in March 2011.
