The view camera was one of the first photographic camera designs and among professional photographers and hobbyists is still very alive and well today. Especially prominent in the current market for film cameras is the 4x5 view camera The excellence of the photographs as well as the freedom of creativity offered are only a couple of the many reasons for this.
So a 4x5 view camera is what precisely? A view camera is really one of the simplest types of camera, though a lot of people used to operating modern cameras would initially think otherwise. A camera with a lens truly can't get much more rudimentary than this. Fundamentally it consists of a rear standard, a front standard, a set of bellows in between and a lens. The front standard is where the lens is mounted and where the shutter (usually inside of all modern-day lenses) is located. The film is held for exposure in the back of the camera or the rear standard. And the rear standard at the back of the camera is where the film is retained for exposure. Although this is the typical layout the majority of cameras are, naturally, going to have more components, particularly more recent models.
The format of the negative created and the size of film utilized is four inches by 5 inches, hence where the 4x5 part of 4x5 view camera comes from. 4x5 is the most popular due to it's ease of use and price but view cameras come in numerous sizes such as 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 12x20 and many more, let alone custom sizes. A credit to it's presence at nearly all specialty shops and the fact that it can be developed for a moderate price (which is almost never the case with most others) 4x5 is still the most popular format.
Now to complicate to a degree that uncomplicated view I set out previously, there are two different basic types of 4x5 view camera.
Monorail cameras are the first of these 2 types. This is the type of view camera that is often employed in a studio. In this model the rear and front standards are both mounted to one central rail that permits them to glide back and forth for focusing. Macro photography and other highly demanding types of photos are often produced with a monorail 4x5 camera due to it's much greater range of movement than the alternative camera variety The downside is that they are often rather weighty and awkward in addition to not being very compact for toting around. Arca-Swiss is one company that produces primarily monorail cameras
The other type of 4x5 camera is known as a field camera. The monorail camera's advantages and disadvantages are reversed in this design. While a 4x5 field camera is deficient to a degree in movements it is usually much lighter and simpler to deal with than a monorail. And for toting around the field camera usually breaks down to fairly small dimensions. This is the chosen camera for most landscape photographers. Camera makers including Shenhao have a pretty good selection of field cameras.
