While many different musicians show up in the movies through all sorts of different types of documentaries about music some musicians will show up in other types of films. David Bowie is one of the best examples.

Over the years the career of David Bowie in film has featured him in a variety of different roles. The history of David Bowie in film includes some of the most notable cult films in history.
In 1967 Bowie appeared in Michael Armstrong's "The Image," a thirteen minute short film. In this film an artist draws a picture that comes to life but will not die not matter how many times the artist tries to stab it. This is a very difficult to find film.
Bowie's film career truly took off in 1976. In that year he starred in "The Man Who Fell to Earth," a film based on a novel by Walter Tevis. This film, which also featured Rip Torn and Candy Clark, features Bowie as an alien who comes to Earth to try and get money and water to help save the dying planet that he came from. This film has proven to be a successful cult favorite over the year and in 2005 was released on DVD by the Criterion studio as a new member of its Criterion Collection of critically celebrated films.
Bowie's next major role was in 1983 in Tony Scott's "The Hunger." In the film Bowie plays a man who is suddenly aging from a vampire's spell. This film was notable for being one of the first major roles for actress Susan Sarandon. Shortly after the film there were many other David Bowie film roles in the 1980s including "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," "Absolute Beginners" and "Into the Night."
In 1986 Bowie starred in another popular classic. In one of the most popular David Bowie film roles in history he starred in Jim Henson's "Labyrinth." Bowie plays Jareth the Goblin King, a ruler of a fantasy world who runs a dangerous maze of monsters. Despite the film not being very successful in the box office it has become a cult favorite.
Since "Labyrinth" there have not been too many notable David Bowie film roles. In 1988 he played as Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese's controversial film "The Last Temptation of Christ." In 1992 he also starred in "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me," a film based on the David Lynch and Mark Frost television series.
Over the years he has also appeared in many documentaries. Among these films include some the 1973 concert film "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" and the 1988 film "John Lennon: Imagine."
