Although it hasn’t been proven yet to be a good algaecide, it has been tested by pond owners themselves that barley straw has the ability to not totally eliminate algae in the pond. But it can control their excessive growth in the water. Not to mention that it will not cause any harm to the living things that live in and on the water pond.
Since barley straw is not actually an algaecide which is known to kill algae, how does it help keep the pond partially free from algae? When it decomposes, it releases some sort of chemical that makes the water unsuitable for algae to flourish in.
The first step you must do is to choose a good store where you can buy barley straw at its cheapest. You need to match the amount of water in your pond to the quantity of barley straw you will get. For an 800-gallon water pond, about 4 ounces of barley straw will be just right. For 1200-gallon water, 8 ounces of barley straw is required. And do the math for a pond that has more than 1200 gallons of water.
Once you have purchased enough barley for your pond, you must make sure that it is securely wrapped in a net. This will allow the pond water to freely flow through the barley straw.
You might wonder how the barley straws will float once you have out them in the water. This is where the soda bottles come in. The meshed barley straws are attached to the empty soda bottle to make the barley straw to float. It will not serve its purpose in your pond if it just settles at the bottom or into mud.
When you have attached the barley straws onto soda bottles, place them in an area in the pond where the water flows. This will allow the barley to decompose properly. A good place would be under a fountain or a water fall. An important thing you need to do before putting the barley straws in the pond is to wipe the algae that have grown in the pond. Since barley straws cannot actually kill existing algae instead, they can prevent the excessive growth of new algae.
You may check the condition of the barley straws in your pond every four to six months depending on the climate in your place. In warmer countries, barley straws are changed at a longer period of time than in colder areas since they decompose faster in colder regions.
Using barley straw is definitely easy if you are patient. However, there are still other things you can use to keep your pond algae free. The use of barley straw is just one of the many choices.
