His fame mainly rests on works like ‘Sanders of the River’, ‘Bones of the River’, ‘The Melody of Death’, ‘The Law of the Four Just Men’ and ‘The Mission That Failed’ etc. in this article, we will speak about Edgar Wallace and his powerful influence in the history of British plays.

As a matter of fact, Edgar Wallace is an author whose novels have been adapted into movies more than any of his contemporaries and next generation writers. The legendary tale of a giant Gorilla and his adventures, ‘King Kong’ was co-written by him. Apart from these, he also wrote a huge number of articles in newspapers and journals in his prolific career. His writings were extremely popular in his time and in a way he paved the way for the modern thriller.

In the early part of his career, Edgar Wallace worked in the Army but soon lost interest in it. During his stint at the Army he met with Mrs. Marion Caldecott and William Shaw Caldecott both of whom encouraged him to take up writing as a profession. This fueled his inherent passion for writing. After his tenure at the Army came to an end, Wallace started working as a correspondent for the London Daily Mail and Reuters. His mission as a reporter gave him inside knowledge of spying in the Russo-Japanese War. The theme of spying that he used in his later novels was taken from this experience. He shifted from his Army career to the career of a writer.

The first novel of Edgar Wallace named ‘THE FOUR JUST MEN’ was published in 1905 and became a runaway hit with the readers. Its massive success inspired the author to write 3 sequels to it. This novel is still immensely popular among lovers of novel. However, it was with the publication of the 1911 novel ‘SANDERS OF THE RIVER’ that Wallace shot into limelight. In it and several subsequent fictions the African theme was used as a backdrop. He began to rise up after this period successfully as an author of some of the greatest works.

Another novel that fetched Edgar Wallace considerable fame is THE GREEN ARCHER. It was adapted into movies thrice. In some of his short stories, Wallace used themes like phantoms and spiritualism. Even though his writings raked in the profits, Wallace ended up losing money owing to his lavish lifestyle and addiction for horse racing and betting. The film adaptations of his stories spread to other countries like Germany. Among these, ‘King Kong’ became the most popular choice for filmmakers and three films were made on this story.

We still remember Edgar Wallace through his popular stories, fictions and novels and he will remain in the heart of many for ever.
