Eight Common Sense Security Tips

Lock all of your doors and windows. This seems pretty obvious; however, you would be surprised to learn that many break-ins occur because the homeowners gave the burglars an easy opportunity to get in by an unlocked door.
While having a scurity system installed in your home is one of the best ways to make sure your home and family are safe, there are steps you can take to make your property more secure without an expensive home security system. Follow these eight common sense security tips and you can rest a little easier.

1. Establish a neighborhood watch program in your community. Believe it or not, these programs are extremely effective. They get everyone in the neighborhood on the same page as to what to look for in terms of security threats. Contact your local police department and they will have an officer come to your neighborhood to help you put the program together.

2. Lock all of your doors and windows. This seems pretty obvious; however, you would be surprised to learn that many break-ins occur because the homeowners gave the burglars an easy opportunity to get in by an unlocked door. All doors should have a deadbolt, a minimum of three-inch screws and a reinforced strike plate. You may also want to get stronger frames as well since if the burglar attempts to kick in your door, the frame will not be compromised.

3. Place a metal rod or a dowel rod in the track of your sliding glass doors. Not only should they be locked, they should not be able to be opened more than a few inches if the lock is opened.

4. Beware of keeping tools in your garage. If a burglar gets into your garage, he will use your tools to get into your house. You should also always lock the door between your garage and your house.

5. Place your interior lights on timers, which will give the illusion that you are home even if you are not. This is an effective deterrent to would-be thieves.

6. Keep your landscaping trimmed so your bushes and trees do not allow anyone to hide in your yard. Your trees should be trimmed so that branches do not give thieves an opportunity to climb to the upper floors of your home.

7. Install motion-activated security lights around your home. Burglars hate light and they will choose a darkened house as a target over a well-lit house every time.

8. If you are going to be gone from your house for several days, have a neighbor collect your newspapers and mail to give would-be burglars the impression that you are at home. Do not leave a message on your voice mail saying that you will be gone.

These are some basic tips that can keep you and your family safer even if you don’t have a home security system installed. Use your common sense and you will have a little more peace of mind knowing that you are safer than you used to be.
